About Harley-Davidson® of Baltimore Service Department
Service Tips for Battery Service and Safety: - Be careful when working with batteries! - Always wear protective glasses to protect the eyes. - Keep the battery away from flammable materials - When jump-starting the bike, don't lean on the battery. - Always store the battery in a properly ventilated area.
The battery of Harley-Davidson® keeps on working even if the bike is not on the road. The brand experts say that the battery of the bike discharges even if it is parked. This is due to the internal load of the bike named 'self-discharge'. The battery discharges more quickly when the temperature is high such as in summers. The other accessories in the bike also increase the battery consumption for example the alarm system. The battery can be permanently damaged if it is completely discharged.
A Harley-Davidson® is suspected of a deep discharge even during riding if the parking time is too long. As per the manufacturer, if you want to keep the battery safe from deep discharge then a portable battery charger such as the Battery Tender by Harley-Davidson® should be used. This battery charger is designed to charge the battery at the required frequency and also has an overcharging protection system.
The latest bikes have batteries with an advanced technology called Advanced Glass Mat (AGM) developed for Harley-Davidson®. These batteries don't require any electrolytes to be added and are completely sealed which never leaks even in a case of body damage because the liquid in the batteries is absorbed by the glass mats which are present between the plates. These batteries are specially designed for the brand and have to pass a strict quality test. The components of the battery are manufactured to cater to the electrical and vibration profile and provide high reliability. The specially designed bolts provide corrosion resistance and the terminals are designed to give maximum contact with the cable. These batteries perform better than the cheap aftermarket batteries.
The life of a battery depends on many factors. According to the manufacturer, a battery should last for at least 5 years if it is properly maintained. It is recommended to use the exact battery as directed by the manufacturer for a specific model that can be purchased from an authorized dealer.
